Artist Statement: Woven Paintings

Years ago when I first experimented with this process of cutting up and weaving paintings together, I was interested in issues of interpersonal relationships. I included figures in the paintings and I saw the process of deciding on how much of one figure to show and how much of the other not to show as an allegory to the personal sacrifices we make in ourselves in an effort to maintain our relationships. Through the years I have experimented with many other techniques, processes and themes but have always found my woven paintings the most satisfying.
In the abstract weavings, I chose to completely step away from the figure. The individual paintings themselves were explorations of shifts in color, shade, depth, texture and motion. I find that cutting up arbitrary abstract forms and weaving them together in a logical pattern is an interesting observation of the relationships between the intended and unintended aspects of our daily lives. It is an innate human desire to create order. Order gives us comfort. This is what I am trying to do, to find comfort, a place to relax amid the chaos.
